Here is What You Need to Know About Perms

Perms

Perm . . . Not a Place for Amateurs

Permanent waves are a fantastic way and versatile process. With today’s perms, you can have everything from body to loose and sexy body waves to true curls. Hair perms will also give you the true “wash and wear” hair style that every woman seeks. A perm can free you from the hassles of setting, blow-drying, and curling irons.

Perms also need a bit of extra care. Keeping hair well-conditioned and moisturized is crucial, so if you live in a desert-like climate, anticipate extra ‘spritzing’ and moistening of hair to keep up curls. Also, plan on using a little hair care product after washing and conditioning to enhance the curls and control any frizz. “Everything You Need to Know About the Perm”

It’s important to consider your hair type and the condition of the hair in determining if you are a candidate for a perm. Damaged, over-processed and most color treated hair should usually not be permed. A perm to hair that is not healthy and in good condition is very damaging to the hair. In extreme cases, it could all need to be cut off.

The type of hair is another thing to consider. The best hair type for a perm is thick hair that has a bit of a natural hair wave. Very fine hair types or thin hair types must use hair perms with extreme care to prevent hair damage. You always want an experienced hairdresser, particularly if you are perming fine or thin hair, to make sure the best possible result.

Very straight hair types and coarse hair types are often resistant to hair perms. Coarse hair is often stubborn about taking a curl and holding the curl. This hair type will most likely to need frequent perming to keep up the hair’s new texture and curl. Regardless of the hair type, you’ll need to choose the right hair care products for hair perms and be gentle in styling the hair.

  3. From what you have described your hair should have no problems with a perm, especially if it is done by a professional.

  4. My hair is long and fine, but it is not perfectly straight. It is in decent condition, as I have only dyed it once. I would like a body wave perm. Would a perm work with my hair (if done professionally), and if so, how long approximately would the perm last?

  5. A perm will work for your hair if it is done right by a professional. For the best results, educate your hairstylist about the history of your hair. Let them know about your previous hair color as well any other treatments.

Perms are permanent. You will probably be able see the difference between your regrowth and permed hair between 4-6 weeks because your hair grows approximately 1/2 per month. Some women decide to get their hair touched up at this time. Body waves are nice. They are looser than traditional perms, so you should be able to go at least two months before you need a touch up.
